This is a new logo design for Union Pacific Railroad, the largest railroad network in the US, and has been in operation since 1862. In school, we all learned about the golden spike that joined the Union Pacific, Central Pacific, and Western Pacific railroads to form the First Transcontinental Railroad. Of the three, the only company still in operation is Union Pacific. During its 160+ years of operation, it's gone through many changes and growths.
I chose to reinvent Union Pacific's logo because I'd like to better understand these background workings of how consumers (like me) get the stuff we need to buy. In rebranding this historical business, I wanted to modernize their image while still acknowledging their history. I wanted to hint at the front grill of steam locomotive engines in the shape of the logo. As for colors, I wanted to get as close to the Pantone swatches for the American flag as possible.
This was a project for a class in logo design, and it was made using Adobe Illustrator for the logo, Adobe InDesign for the branding guide, and Adobe Photoshop for the mockups.
